Gulf of Maine Northern Shrimp Season- 2012

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) announced on November 1st the rules for the upcoming Gulf of Maine shrimp season. First, the ASMFC reduced the quota by 50% from 4000 metric tons to 2000 metric tons. In order to achieve these desired results the commission restricted the fishing to only draggers during the month of January. Further restrictions were added as where fishing will only be permitted during Monday, Thursday, and Fridays. These regulations logistically make it impossible for us to supply fresh whole Maine shrimp during the month of January in Connecticut.

On February 1st, the shrimp trappers are allowed to trap shrimp. Unlike their dragger counterparts, the trappers are allowed to fish everyday during the week. However, landings are limited to 1000 lbs per day. February will be the only opportunity for us to supply fresh whole Maine shrimp in Connecticut this season.

This season’s 50% quota reduction is the result of last year’s catch exceeding the allocation by the same amount. Thus, ASMFC determined that this fishery was being overfished and strict catch limits were needed. Many argue that the science used to establish these quotas are seriously flawed. However that conversation is too complex in scope for this update.

In short, expect Maine shrimp supplies to be tight this season with prices higher than last year.  For those who wish to put some clean peeled shrimp meat in the freezer for scampi, creole or any of your favorite recipes, we would highly recommend that you place your order early.

Finally, for those that would like to take advantage of this year’s prices we have a limited supply of cleaned and peeled, frozen shrimp meat available.
